Know your track, especially now, because....

Mar 6, 2018

As I was handicapping this past weekend and was reviewing stats from some of the current meets running, as it often happens, I thought of my late dad, Tom Worth, and could almost hear him say, "Jonathan, to find a horse with an edge, it's very important to Know Your Track." He repeated this often, not just to me when he was teaching me how to handicap so many years ago, but also to all the many handicappers from around the country who called or wrote him.

As many of you well know, he spoke and wrote extensively about the importance of knowing how trainers, jockeys and horses performed at a certain track. For example, some trainers and riders excelled at Aqueduct or perhaps Belmont, but not at the other. They may not have the same record at their current track as they had at another, if they ship in and out of other track(s).

It's important to know how they respond to certain conditions at the track. Who are the regulars? Who are the shippers? What are the statistics?

Of course, as handicappers we now have far more data available to us and easy to access at that. I can remember how my dad kept numerous file cards on trainers, jockeys and horses, and yet somehow he managed it all and would actually become ingrained in his memory. How times have changed!

Regardless of our instant access to more handicapping information than we ever dreamed of years ago, it's still important to KNOW YOUR TRACK, no matter how many, (or few), you handicap. Be familiar with its regulars and its peculiarities, meaning any distinctinve features and characteristics that certain trainers and horses take to well, or maybe not so well.

And "hearing" my father's voice, made me especially cognizant that this is an opportune time to examine the stats, the track records, etc. at current meets BECAUSE many are well underway, some in the midst of lengthy meets. Thus, we can readily examine the meet history and gauge who is hot and who is not so hot.

Meets such as Aqueduct, Santa Anita, and the Fair Grounds are just a few meets that are all a few months or more into the meet and thus an opportune time for you to review current stats and use your observations to cash more tickets.

The Big Easy, Super Cluster 2, or perhaps the favorite of many handicappers, The Even Finish spot plays can help you capitalize and exploit the situations that are ripe for picking! Or, of course you can subscribe to one of our Selection Services and let me do much of the work for you.

Call or email me if you'd like to discuss handicapping or questions on any of our handicapping publications, spot plays or selection services. I always enjoy hearing from you!
